The shift that is taking place in the study of child and adolescent psychology is a movement away from understanding the causes of negative behaviour to understanding the factors that lead to responsible, cooperative, productive, useful and contributing behaviours. The concept of resiliency acknowledges that life presents challenges in adverse and unexpected events. How can we promote resiliency- the capacity to move through challenges in a way that enhances rather than diminishes mental health? The resiliency research essentially confirms Adler's concept of Social Interest.
This workshop will introduce participants to resiliency research and to ways that this can be translated into interventions that will improve child/adolescent social and emotional development. The workshop will include a live demonstration and introduce a school and family based programme that teaches the essential social-emotional competencies of resilient youth.
